The San Francisco 49ers' Trey Lance and starters

played in Thursday night's 17-0 preseason loss to the Houston Texans.

But the offense never got going.

Lance played for three series and completed seven of 11 passes for 49 yards,

was sacked once, and scrambled for a yard.

Kyle Shanahan says the only thing Lance could improve on is not being so messy.

Despite the few opportunities Lamar had to play, he proved his worth in long-down situations.

Lance made a couple of good throws, including a 14-yard connection with Malik Turner,

but continued to struggle with short-range accuracy.

With Mike McGlinchey and Trent Williams sitting, the protection wasn't great for Lance.

The Niners continued to work on revamping the offensive line, but they had more success while Lance was under center.
