This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country. The tournament will be the second to be held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan.

For the first time since 1938, the World Cup will be held in November and December, due to the unavailability of the usual June and July dates due to Qatar’s climate.

As the host nation, Qatar automatically qualified for the tournament. The remaining 31 places will be determined through a worldwide qualification process, in which a total of 210 teams are expected to compete.
